In compliance with the National HIV/AIDS Strategy (2009 - 2015) and to continue our community committment to reduce HIV transmission risks, we have ramped up our community outreach efforts. The following are a few examples of what we have been doing:
Our staff currently provides prevention education classes for several alcohol and substance abuse facilities, such as Phoenix Recovery, A&D Treatment Solutions, Adult Corrections, Adolescent Center for Treatment, and the Johnson County Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center.
An integral part of our prevention program involves communications with individuals via online personal applications such as Craigslist, Manhunt and the like. This opportunity allows us to reach out to individuals that might not feel or understand the prevelance of risk. Our goal is NOT to disrupt, impede, or judge any relationship development via these applications, rather we only wish to utilize the opportunity to ensure our community has the appropriate information to make educated sexual decisions, thus reducing their risk for HIV transmission.
Our success with this initiative has been phenominal. As a result, we have been asked to educate other community based organizations, and have presented at both state and national levels.
